Crime rates increasing in the Smoky River Region

Imagine Jean Chymboryk’s surprise when she discovered her acreage north of Donnelly had been robbed earlier this month.
The woman, who prides herself on maintaining a beautiful yard, noticed her garden decorations had been taken while she was gone to a doctor’s appointment.
“I was so hurt, because they weren’t invited here and they were trespassing,” says Chymboryk. “My husband’s in palliative care and I can barely walk, and they have the nerve to come steal from us.”
The Chymboryks are one of many families who have had their property stolen in the last few months.
“If anyone knows who took my statues, I’d appreciate if they’d let me know or get them back for me,” she says. “I can’t believe someone would do this.”
The McLennan RCMP sent out a press release this week announcing the increase of vandalism in local communities.
The release stated clearly that most robberies have been occurring in vehicles that are improperly secured. They remind property owners to lock anything of value.
“I want to know why they did this,” says Chymboryk. “It’s such an invasion of privacy to have this done. How did they know I had these items, and why did they think they could take them from me?”
Chymboryk, who was the recipient of the 2005 Albert Fontaine beautiful yard award, says the thieves took at least ten pieces that have more sentimental value than cash value.
