Demolition derby to take place June 13 in Donnelly

Smoky River Demolition Derby will be back next month, and organizer Cindy Cloutier explains this will be the last year the event takes place.
“There has not been a car made that can be in a derby since 1986,” explains Cloutier. “Anything that is fuel injected, has air bags and a smaller frame are not good for the derby. The cars aren’t as big as they once were, so they don’t make a very good show.”
The derby will be held on June 13 at the Smoky River Agricultural Fair Grounds. Entry for the competition is $75 per car.
“We’re looking for cars and possibly trucks, vans or front-wheel drive cars if there is enough interest to make a heat,” says Cloutier. “We are also looking into entertainment between heats.”
Registration for the event will be at 11 a.m. from the fair grounds.
Beer gardens will also be on site, as well as a food booth throughout the day.
“We want to go out with one last hurrah,” explains Cloutier. “We will have prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, best decorated, and best hit.”
A grudge match will also take place at the end of the derby. All participants who can get their cars running can enter by putting money in to a “pot”, as Cloutier explains. The last car running will receive the pot of money.
“We’re looking to make this event bigger and better for the last derby ever.”
The derby typically is held on Father’s Day weekend, but with a number of other events occurring, the organizers have chosen to switch the derby to the previous Sunday.
The derby will begin at 1 p.m., and will wrap up when all the cars have completed their heats. Cloutier says this depends on the number of cars entered.
