One man is dead and another is listed in serious condition at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie after the welding truck they were in left Highway 49 and rolled in the west ditch on the morning of Sept. 13.
Cst. Peter Clarke of the McLennan RCMP detachment says the fatal rollover occurred at around 7 a.m., approximately one kilometre north of the Highway 2 junction south of Guy.
“A preliminary investigation has revealed that two male occupants were southbound on Highway 49 in a 2002 Silver Dodge one-tonne welding truck when the vehicle entered the west ditch, struck an approach, and rolled,” says Cst. Clarke.
RCMP, along with Smoky River Regional Fire & Rescue and Alberta Health Services EMS were dispatched to the scene of the rollover.
Cst. Clarke says witnesses found both males located outside of the vehicle when they arrived upon the scene.
One male was found deceased, while the second was seriously injured and subsequently transported to the QEII Hospital by STARS Air Ambulance.
Traffic was limited to one lane for much of day following the rollover as highway crews cleaned up debris and removed the mangled wreckage from the scene.
The fatal rollover remains under investigation by RCMP and the Peace River Collision Reconstructionist/Analyst Office.
The names of the two male occupants have not been released by RCMP.
Additional details will be released as they become available.
