A family vacation in November of 2011 by Alain and Karla Labrecque was all it took for the former Peace Country couple to decide they needed to abandon their home, situated directly in the Baytex Energy Ltd.'s Reno field.
Mike Labrecque loved his role as a contractor for Koch Exploration Canada Ltd. and Prosper Petroleum Ltd. But his world was turned upside down beginning in the summer of 2011 after Baytex Energy Ltd. took over oilfield leases/well sites in the Reno field area earlier that year.
Area families are hoping the results and recommendations of the Alberta Energy Regulator's inquiry in Peace River examing the health effects of odour and emissions from bitumen extraction in the Reno field will bring about postive regulatory change throughout the oilfield industry.
Residents of this region, and Canada in general, are well accustomed to a heavy winter climate, along with the nasty conditions that come with it including towering piles of snow, unbelievably cold conditions, and ice. All can pose dangerous threats to people’s well-being, and proper management practices to avoid problems or mishaps is important, but what about the environment?
