Falher pioneer Ferdinand Levesque and Elaine Smith of McLennan received Queen’s Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medals last week for their dedicated service to their communities.
Dunvegan MLA Hector Goudreau presented the awards Feb. 28, a presentation marking the 50th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
“It’s a tremendous recognition on behalf of the province to present these awards to local residents dedicated to serve their communities and region,” said Goudreau. “Commitment like this makes our communities much better for everyone.”
Smith was nominated by Town of McLennan council, while Levesque’s nomination was initiated by his granddaughter Anne Levesque who received added support.
Both recipients were humbled to receive this honour.
“It was a pleasant surprise to receive this award,” said Smith. “It’s nice to be acknowledged.”
“I’m honoured to receive this award,” said Levesque, 80. “I was wondering why I earned this honour.”
“I can think of many other people who are more deserving of the award than I am,” he added.
Both recipients from the Smoky River region reflect the leadership and dedication to community service.
Smith is tirelessly working to contribute to her community, stated the nomination.
She volunteers for the McLennan Elks’ Royal Purple weekly Bingo and other fund-raising projects.
Over the years, she has also been active in community activities and organizations such as figure skating, Girl Guides, and minor hockey and softball.
Levesque has spent a lifetime devoted to enhancing the community by playing a vital role in various educational, agricultural, parochial, and youth-oriented organizations and activities, stated the nomination.
Current and future generations will benefit from his altruist nature.
Over the decades, Levesque has been active with Falher and District Co-op board, Falher consolidated school board, parent-teachers association, farm credit appeal board, farmers’ union local secretary, Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church, and many social events.
As two of seven recipients in the Dunvegan constituency, and several dozen throughout the province, Smith and Levesque received special congratulations from Gene Zwozdesky, Minister of Community Development and Duputy Government House Leader.
“As minister responsible for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal Program, it is with pleasure that I congratulate you as a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal,” said Zwozdesky.
“Congratulations on your achievements and thank you for your outstanding service to your community.
“You have certainly earned this honour.”
Besides a medal, recipients received a lapel pin, a letter from Zwozdesky, a certificate from the Canadian Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson, and a photo of the Queen.
