Word of the Smoky River region is spreading like wildfire around the world.

Three delegations of tourists from France, the province of Quebec, and the Alberta provincial Francophone association will be visiting the Smoky River region in the next three months to explore the region and promote the area back in their homelands and around the world.

Smoky River Tourism Association president Richard Primeau reported at its regular monthly meeting May 4 that the groups want to visit this Francophone region to help promote the area farther abroad.

“We seem to be getting more people and groups phoning to make arrangements to visit our region and promote it,” says Primeau. “More and more people and groups are getting interested in coming here to tour.”

Visitors this weekend

This weekend – May 13 and 14 – three tour guides from France will tour the region and Francophone communities in the Peace Country in a visit coordinated and sponsored by Bruno Lavoie of Association Canadiencce-Francoise de l’Alberta –ACFA.

“These people are promoters and they want to make packages of the region to promote in France,” says Primeau.

Several newspaper journalists from the province of Quebec will be touring the region May 26 and 27 to help them write tourism stories to promote this region

Then, 44 farmers from France will visit the region on June 4 – based in McLennan – to meet with local Francophone farmers and develop farm tours in the Smoky River regiion for French tourists.

Many of them will be investors, says Primeau.

Further promoting this region, Alberta Tourism is developing tourism packages for northern Alberta to promote in the United States of America in states near the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, as well as Texas, California, and other major states, reports secretary-treasurer Penny Fox.

A free workshop for local businesses with at least one Francophone employee will be offered by ACFA on Aug. 27 – all day – to guide businesses in developing tourism packages.
