Former Falher intern dies

Tragedy struck the Town of Falher last with the news that former municipal intern Liz Stecko was killed in a motor-vehicle collision.
Local municipal officials were informed by her employer Kneehill County in Three Hills that she perished in the incident Friday night May 20 while travelling home to Coleman to be with family for the Victoria Day weekend, says Town Administrator Gerard Nicolet.
She was 26 years of age.
“We were shocked to hear of her tragic death and saddened by the loss of such a wonderful person,” says Nicolet.
Details and location of the incident were not available.
Stecko served as intern with the Town of Falher under the Municipal Internship Program of Alberta Municipal Affairs for 11 months before taking a post with the County of Kneehill as senior planner on April 18.
“In the short time she was in our community, she left her mark in our hearts,” says Deputy Mayor Donna Buchinski. Mayor Margaret Tardif was unavailable for comment.
Close friends Councillor Guy Beaudoin and Smoky River Regional Economic Development officer Greg Radstaak attended the funeral mass May 26 in Blairmore at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
“It’s tragic that such a young life was taken at this time after she worked with the Town of Falher to train and start a new career in the municipal field,” says Penny Fox, another close friend of Stecko.
“We’re going to miss her youthful spirit and we’re praying for her family.”
Elzbeita (Elizabeth) Stecko was the daughter of Ken and Diana Stecko of Coleman.
“She was a very enthusiastic young woman with a great future ahead of her and full of energy,” says Nicolet. “This is a terrible loss to her family, friends, and people she worked with.”
