Lakeland Eagles announce player acquisitions

The North Peace Hockey League’s Lakeland Eagles have announced the acquisition of several marquee players to complement the existing roster.
Jimmy McLean, head coach of the organization, says management recently locked up the services of four players, including former junior ‘A’ standouts Matt Hunter and Mark Lindsay as well as snipers Todd Holt and Jerry Cunningham.
“They’re all very skilled and exeptionally talented hockey players,” says McLean, adding that the foursome represents a “great addition to our organization.”
Holt and Cunningham are no strangers to the NPHL or Eagles organization. Both came over from the now defunct Horse Lake Thunder in the 2005-’06 season, helping Lakeland advance to the semifinal playoff round before the team bowed out to Spirit River in six games.
The two players were expected to be in the lineup last Saturday when Lakeland hosted Fairview at home.
The positive news was made public last Tuesday – the same night Lakeland was to face High Prairie at home in the first meeting of the season between the two arch rival clubs.
That game, however, along with the scheduled meeting between Valleyview and the Falher Pirates had to be postponed due to a severe storm which blanketed the area with more than 20 centimetres of snow.
“We just didn’t feel it was worth the risk,” says McLean, adding that the game will be rescheduled.
Lakeland played in Manning last Friday prior to hosting Fairview at home Dec. 8.
The back-to-back games fall on the heels of an 8-4 victory by the Eagles in Fairview Dec. 1 highlighted by an impressive six-point performance from veteran forward Al Anderson.
His line, which included Jay Anderson and Travis Cunningham, fired on all cylinders throughout the game, accounting for 16 of the team’s 18 points.
“Al’s line was dominant from start to finish. They just played a superb game,” McLean said.
Anderson notched four goals (three of which came on power-play opportunities) and added two assists in the game which saw Lakeland out-shot by a count of 47-42, including a wide margin of 25-7 in the final period.
“Sandford Lamouche had a great game for us in net,” McLean adds.
Also scoring for the Eagles was Travis Cunningham, who picked up the natural hat-trick and added three assists and Jay Anderson, who pitched in with four helpers in the winning effort.
The win brings Lakeland back to the .500 mark on the season at 4-4.
Next action for the Eagles is Dec. 14 when the team travels to Falher for its first meeting of the year against the Pirates.
The club returns home the following night to take on last year’s defending Campbell Cup champions, the Peace River Stampeders.
Game time at H.W. Fish Arena is 8:30 p.m.
