One of the most recognizable honey producers in the Peace Country is complementing its insatiably sweet line of retail products with the addition of organic ketchup and barbecue sauce to the fold. Wolfe Honey Company Incorporated in Guy, owned and operated by Gilbert and Sharon Wolfe, officially unveiled the arrival of its Bodacious Tomato Ketchup and Amazing Dad’s Barbecue Sauce last week. “We’ve been firmly focussed on this development concept for the better part of the past year,” says Gilbert, who refers to the introduction of the two savoury products as a howling success. “The initial response has been an extremely positive,” Wolfe says, adding that company intends to begin manufacturing the products from its Guy plant by the spring of 2008. “We’re anticipating full-fledged production and distribution by early next year.” Both are made exclusively with certified organic honey and fall under the company’s existing Honey Bunny product line, which also includes creamed and liquid honey (both natural and organic). The two new product additions are available in the company’s same user-friendly packaging design consisting of clear plastic pouches with eye-catching graphic designs and colours. The pouches come with an easy pour removable cap that acts as a vacuum for the inner pouch, resulting in clean, no drip use right up until the very last tasty drop. “I personally feel it’s probably the most innovative and unique packaging concept to ever surface within the honey industry,” says Wolfe, adding that they are proving to be a slam dunk among consumers. Another benefit of the packaging is its effectiveness in helping to reduce the carbon footprint on the environment. “Every one truckload of poaches is equivalent to 25 truckloads of rigid containers,” Wolfe explains. The company recently received its first shipment of ketchup and barbecue sauce packages from the Food Development Processing Centre located in Leduc and is presently in the process of sending out samples through their brokers to locations in the United States as well as throughout all of Canada. The products are also being introduced locally at various retailers, including Falher IGA, Falher Co-op, Falher Hotel as well as The Coffee Connection and Lakeview (Bigway) Foods in McLennan. The introduction of ketchup and barbecue sauces represents is only a small taste of things to come according to Wolfe, who says they plan to introduce several additional barbecue sauce flavours. And that’s merely scratching the surface. “We have some really slick products that we’re presently working on behind the scenes which will be introduced in the not too distant future,” says Wolfe. Wolfe Honey Co. has registered the Honey Bunny name in Canada and now has exclusive rights to its use on the retail market. The company’s products are also listed with the Whole Foods Chain in the United States – the largest natural organic retailer south of the border. The business has long-term plans of distributing its product both on Canadian and U.S. soil, as well as globally. Wolfe Honey Company Inc. is solely responsible for producing more than 10 per cent of the honey produced in the Peace Country each year.
