McLennan’s 2007 Volunteer of the Year recipient is no stranger to the importance of giving something back to the community. That was the message relayed to approximately 100 residents attending last month’s annual town Christmas banquet at the Elks Hall where Grant Hicks was formally recognized for his ongoing volunteer contributions to the community. Acknowledging Hicks for his valuable community involvement was Mayor Don Regier. “As past-president of the McLennan Local Recreation Board, I was greatly appreciative of all the support Grant provided.” “He would typically approach me with an offer to help out in whatever capacity he could when it came to various initiatives and projects within our board,” he said. Hicks, who continues to be an active member of the McLennan Local Recreation Board and Director of the Lakeland Eagles North Peace Hockey League organization, was a key member of the arena committee which was responsible for coordinating the recent improvement project at H.W. Fish Arena. Countless volunteer hours were required for the major project which included a new roof for the arena, interior insulation, removal of the old boards and installation of new boards. “In addition to volunteering his services, Grant supplied and paid workers from his company – Hicks Honey – as they were required in addition to donating a load of plywood,” Regier added. “His attitude could be best described by the motto ‘Don’t ask what your community can do for you, ask what you can do for your community.’” He went on to say that Hicks is positive role model who inspires others to actively contribute to their community without seeking recognition. “Grant is the type of individual who acknowledges the support of others while never drawing attention to his own contributions.
