A curling foursome of young ladies from Girouxville has qualified to compete in the Alberta Winter Games in Leduc from Feb. 14 to 17.
The team of skip Chelsea Doucet, third Krystin Aubin, second Monique MacFarlane, and lead Sandi Hodgson beat a team from Eaglesham 7-1 in the final of the three-team zone qualifying bonspiel in Peace River on Jan. 5 and 6.
“We have a pretty good chance of winning some games at the Winter Games,” says Fern Doucet, coaching the team in its fourth season.
“Competing in the Winter Games will be a great experience for the girls.”
The qualifying bonspiel was just the second competition for the Girouxville girls this season.
“After their first game, they settled down and they were more concentrated on their game and played much stronger,” says coach Doucet.
Now the team is gearing up for the Winter Games.
“The girls are very excited to qualify because this will be the last opportunity to compete in the Winter Games, “says coach Doucet, noting that the girls will be over-age for the next Winter Games.
This season, the team is competing in the Peace Curling Association Juvenile Super League for youth 17-and-under inaugural season.
Currently the team is in the middle of the 10-team league teams, finishing second in the girls’ division last year.
“This is very good competition for the girls, and the girls are curling more consistently,” says Doucet.
Girouxville hosts the juvenile super league on Jan. 26.
The team also competete in the juvenile provincials the past two years, facing very strong competition.
While playing square draws in Girouxville, the team may also compete in a bonpsiel or two leading up the Winter Games.
