Three up-and-coming members of Twilight Figure Skating Club captured several medals the Slave Lake Shooting Stars Skating Club’s Fun Meet Jan. 19 and 20. Tiana Aubin, 11, won gold in introductory free skate, silver in solo dance, and bronze in introductory elements while Chelsea Doran, 12, captured bronze medals in introductory free skate and introductory elements, and finished fifth in solo dance. Célina Bouchard, 7, placed sixth in introductory elements. Her sister, Josée Bouchard, could only watch from the sidelines suffering from a foot injury. “The three girls skated fabulously,” says Jacquie Bouchard, coach of the club based at Guy-Donnelly Sportex, serving with the club since 1996. “It’s their best competition to date.” “This is the hardest I have seen them skate, and the most I have seen them improve,” adds coach Bouchard. As a team of three, the girls finished fifth as eight clubs competed. “The girls skated strong as a team and we were hoping they would have finished higher, but the competition was tough,” says coach Bouchard. Skating for several years, the girls are keen on the ice. “I felt fantastic winning,” says Aubin, skating in her fifth year. “When I learn to do something new and do it in front of a crowd, I really get excited.” “I was proud of myself on the ice,” says Doran, skating in her fourth year. “It’s fun to meet new people at competitions.” “It was fun skating,” says Bouchard, in her fifth year skating. “I was nervous at first but I feel I did really well.” “I like skating because I learn new things.” Upcoming, the girls have one more test day on Feb. 2 and 3 before one final competition in Fort St. John, British Columbia on March 14 to 16. Spring carnival - set for Feb. 29 Twilight Figure Skating Club is gearing up for its year-end carnival – “Soundtrack Spectacular – on Feb. 29 at Guy-Donnelly Sportex at 7 p.m. This year, the club has decreased in enrolment, with just under 20 youth members in CanSkate and six in the junior and senior group.
