Four seek election in Dunvegan - Central Peace

Completing his second term as a Member of the Legislature Assembly of Alberta, Hector Goudreau of Falher faces at least three challengers in the provincial election called for March 3. Voters head to the polls to elect an MLA for Dunvegan – Central Peace electoral division. Candidates confirmed to date Representing the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta, Goudreau is facing Dale Lueken of Whitelaw who represents the Wildrose Alliance Party of Alberta, the recent amalgamation of the Alliance Party of Alberta and the Wildrose Party of Alberta, and Nathan Macklin of Debolt for the New Democratic Party of Alberta, and Bob Woken of Rycroft for the Liberal Party of Alberta. Nominations can be filed until Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. Results of the last election in November 2004 were very tight as Goudreau narrowly edged Lueken. The current minister of tourism, recreation, parks, and culture garnered 3,670 votes (44 per cent of the votes), ahead of Lueken with 3,322 votes (40 per cent), well ahead of Liberal candidate Don Thompson of Calgary with 689 votes (8 per cent), New Democratic candidate Leon Pendleton of Grande Prairie with 446 votes (5 per cent), and Lanny Portsmouth of Hines Creek with 118 votes (1 per cent). Are you on the voters’ list? “If you have moved or changed your name since the last enumeration was conducted in August-September 2004, you may need to contact the office of the returning officer to update your information,”says Larry Chorney, returning officer for Dunvegan – Central Peace, based in Fairview. “If people are not on the voters’ list, they will be able to get sworn in at the polls.” Two documents of personal identification are required for registering. If voting at another subdivision, voters will be required to sign a special declaration. For voting in a provincial election in Alberta, voters must be a Canadian citizen, a minimum of 18 years of age, ordinarily residing in Alberta for at least six months, and is ordinarily a resident in the electoral division and subdivision. Advance polls are scheduled for Feb. 28 to March 1 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. “Advance polls and polling stations on polling day will be published in local community newspapers,” says Chorney. Voters absent during the advance polls and election day will be able to cast a special ballot by requesting a ballot from the returning officer.
