Five young ladies of the Smoky River region came home with many memories but no medals at the Alberta Winter Games on the weekend of Feb. 14 to 17.
The team of skip Chelsea Doucet, third Krystin Aubin, second Monique MacFarlane, and lead Sandi Hodgson of Girouxville Curling Club represented the Peace zone in the games.
Alana Chenard of Falher competed in girls’ hockey.
Chenard was excited about the Games.
During round-robin play, the Peace zone lost 2-0 to Parkland, won 4-2 to the northeast, and lost 5-1 to the Sunny South.
“Hopefully, these games will open up other great opportunities for me such as the under-16 girls provincial team,” says Chenard, 14.
Some 80 girls will be selected from the Winter Games to attend a camp this summer and pick the under-16 team in Camrose.
“Meeting new people and making new friends was one of the highlight.”
“I was proud to be chosen as one of the assistant captains of my team,” says Chenard.
“The coaching staff was fantastic and the weekend was a very positive experience.”
Two ladies from Tangent were on the team staff – trainer Amanda Ouellet and Carmen Lunn as director of operations.
In curling, the Girouxville girls’ foursome lost 6-0 in the consolation final to Edmonton before another game.
During round-robin play, the local girls lost 10-5 to Parkland, lost 9-3 to Blackgold/Yellowhead, won 6-4 over Northeast, and lost consolation final 8-4 to Big Country.
Members of the team did not respond to email messages for comments.
