The Lakeland Eagles have advanced to the North Peace Hockey League’s Campbell Cup final for the second time in as many years. Lakeland earned the right to move on to the final last week after handing Fairview a devastating one-two offensive knock-out punch in games four and five to dash the Kings’ hopes of playing in the Campbell Cup. The Eagles, which held a 2-1 edge in the series after a win in game three of their best-of-seven semifinal series squeaked out a 7-6 in Fairview March 8 prior to putting the final nail in their coffin with a solid 10-5 win at home in game five March 12. The 7-6 win saw the highly touted Eagles jump out to an early 3-0 first period lead on goals from Matt Hunter, James Tallman and Travis Cunningham. A resilient Kings squad would, however, bounce right back with three goals of their own before Jay Anderson notched his first of the night for a 4-3 lead after one period. Lakeland padded that lead at 5-3 on T. Cunningham’s second of the game before Fairview responded with two goals of their own for a 5-5 tie heading into the third period where Jerry Cunningham and Dallas Jackson found the back of the net to help secure the win. Scoring in last Wednesday’s 10-5 win for Lakeland was J. Cunningham with a three-goal effort, Hunter with a pair. Singles went to Tallman, T. Cunningham, Dustin Kersey, and Brendan Hutchingson. The Lakeland/Spirit River final began last Saturday in McLennan. Game two is March 18 in Spirit River, followed by game three in McLennan March 20. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
