Smoky River’s midget tier two hockey club has earned bragging rights as the top team in the All Peace Minor Hockey League this season. The local club recently hosted Spirit River in the final two-game, total points series which saw them rattle off two straight victories to claim the league title. They included a 4-2 home win March 8 followed by a 3-0 road win at Spirit River the next day. Game one saw Smoky River get off to a solid start by jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Jacob Hausler at 6:34 and Bradley Drouin at the 19:26 mark before Spirit River cut the lead in half just 11 seconds later. Stan Chavis gave Smoky River a 3-1 edge at 11:14 of the middle frame with Spirit River responding just under two minutes later to trim the lead to 3-2 after forty minutes of play. The only scoring in the third period came at 6:22 when Kevin Notenbomer notched his first goal of the game to put Smoky River up 4-2. He also added two assists in the game. From there, the scene shifted to Spirit River where a determined Smoky River squad scored once in each period for a 3-0 win, capped by a strong goaltending performance from Daniel Brochu who picked up the shutout. Mathieu Chabot got the offence rolling at the 4:02 mark of the opening period with B. Drouin and Robert Gagnon providing insurance with goals in the second and third period to seal the deal for Smoky River.
