Girouxville youth curling program another success
news4

This year’s crop of curlers involved in Girouxville Sports Club’s youth curling program.

Doreen Dumont
For the Smoky River Express

It’s been another outstanding year for the Girouxville Youth Curling Program. With 44 students attending the program and two draws every Wednesday, we were a very busy group. We started our season Jan. 9 with instructional programs. During this time the beginners learned the rules of the game, how to slide, and their in and out-turns with Chantal Dumont and Britney Daubert. Intermediate students practiced their sliding and shooting skills with Janisa Aubin and Kristen Aubin. The advanced group had the privilege of learning strategy skills from Denis Boisvert, Eugene Turcotte, Darcy Boisvert, and Brandon Lefebvre. Without the help of our coaches, our students would not be able to get as good of a handle on the game. On Jan. 23 we started the round-robin tournament which lasted until March 19. During these weeks students were divided into 11 teams. This is when the kids got to really learn how to play the game and how to have fun curling. Tied for first place during the round- robin was the teams skipped by Darcy Boisvert, Stephan Blanchette, and Chantal Dumont. On March 26 we had a potluck supper for the curlers and their families, at which time the curlers were presented with their year-end gifts. With the help of many parents we also had a very successful bonspiel on March 7, 8, and 9. We had 11 teams attend our bonspiel with first in the ‘A’ Event going to the Stacie Yaremko rink from Eaglesham. First in the ‘B’ Event went to the Donald Laurin rink from Girouxville, and first in the ‘C’ Event went to the Thomas Brochu rink, also from Girouxville. Our season would have not been as successful without the help of many businesses and parents. On behalf of the Girouxville Curling club I would like to thank: Girouxville Coop, Triple N Trucking, Viterra, Smoky River Seed Company and R.P. Mad Enterprise. Triple G Trucking, Syngenta, Farm Credit Canada (FCC), Westport Grain, Emile Doucette, Paradis Honey, KTM Machining, Village Sound, Blanchette Farms, Smoky River Dental, Hair 4-U, Falher Coop, Falher IDA, Mary Kay Cosmetics- Cherie Daubert, Falher IGA, R & M Oilfield, J & G Glass, Sylvain & Doran, Fountain Tire, Bear Paw Outfitting, Bad Spirit Designs, Sammy’s Steak & Pizza, Greywolf Enterprises, MD of Smoky River, True Value, Home Hardware, and Falher Holdings, our treasurer Claude Girard, our caretaker Pat Desranleau, Diane Blanchette, Sam Blanchette, Lea Brochu, Maureen Brochu, Lise Paradis, Doreen Nolette, Joanne Brulotte, Nicole Parker, Kim White, Wendy Anctil, and all the parents who worked their shift in the food booth. At the Girouxville Sports Club we always stress the importance of sportsmanship. It’s not if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. I would also like to extend a big thank-you to our curlers for continually showing respect towards others during our curling season and at our bonspiel.
