On April 12 women from around Alberta joined in Falher to raise money for the Parish St. Anne. The event called “Celebration of Life and Gratitude of Women” was held at the Chevaliers Centre in Falher. About 500 women were in tow for the formal event that focused on the advancements, devotion and work women make in their personal homes and workplace. “We raised a lot of money (for the parish),” says organizer Doris Doyle, who explains that the final fundraising tally is not in. “People were even giving me personal cheques to donate to the parish.” This is not the first year Doyle has held a gala in Falher. In the past, organizers have raised money for the women’s shelter, children with development disabilities, firemen, victim services and for water wells in Zaire. The evening included a catered supper created by Francine Sliger and served by male waiters, motivational guest speaker Eveline Charles, and booths set up by local female entrepreneurs. “The highlight for me was the women enjoying being together,” says Doyle. “There were a lot of hugs and reminiscing. It was nice to see them having so much fun.” Eveline Charles, formally of Falher, spoke at the event about what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. She now owns a chain of salons and spas in two different provinces which are doing extremely well. “People from out of town couldn’t believe how fabulous it was,” says Doyle. “We appreciate everyone’s help, including the waiters who worked their buns off.” Doyle was given special recognition from the Legislative Assembly of Alberta as Dunvegan-Central Peace MLA Hector Goudreau was on hand to present Doyle with a plaque from the province acknowledging her dedication and commitment to the community. The province recognized her for the 25 years of commitment in acquiring finances for non-profit organizations that need funding. Doyle sends special thanks to the waiters who stayed after the event to help clean the hall. She also wishes to thank Eveline Charles, Falher IDA pharmacy and flowers, True Value, UFA and all the other businesses who donated to the event. “A special prize was an Italian designed purse worth $500 that was bid on by women at the event,” says Doyle, who explains that to win the purse women had to put $2 into the purse for a 50/50 draw. “In the end Barb Bastien won $1,800 which, a large percentage of which she donated back to the parish.” Doyle is unsure of whether or not another gala is on the future schedule. She also admits that the itch to organize another event may come to her after a short time on hiatus.
