Falher town council has awarded final contracts for improvements to the new curling rink and additions to the Falher Recreation Complex.
The building, which was purchased last year and stored since in a Falher Alfalfa storage shed, will be begin to be erected on July 7.
Contracts for the arena have been awarded, each to complete the arena sprinkler system, elevator foundations and the elevator system.
“Demolition of the curling rink commenced on June 2,” says town administrator Gerard Nicolet.
“Construction will commence in the next week and will last three weeks.”
The approved arena sprinkler system will begin when the mechanical systems are installed into the curling rink.
Contracts were awarded to Nick’s Mechanical from Grimshaw that will also be completing the mechanical work.
Approved budget will include curling rink sprinkler systems on each side of the look out glass from the arena.
In order to meet regulations the system had to be installed focussing on the glass between the arena and curling rink.
There will also be sprinkler systems installed throughout the arena.
Final budget will rest at approximately $84,000.
“The sprinkler system will allow us to have more than two non-recreational activities held each year,” says Nicolet.
“This could include such things as a trade show, car show and concerts, to name a few.”
Construction of the mechanical system in the curling rink and sprinkler system will commence mid August.
An elevator will be installed in the arena in the next few months.
Contracts have been awarded to RAM Manufacturing Ltd. of Edmonton for the building and installing of the elevator.
The elevator will be for transportation of goods to the top level of the arena.
It will also be available for those in wheel chairs during hockey games. However; the elevator will be a lock system to prevent vandalism and false use of the contraption.
Foundation for the elevator will commence at the same time as the foundation for the curling rink.
The structure will be installed in August, just in time for hockey season.
Total project cost is estimated in the area of $100,000.
This will include concrete joining between each floor and the elevator surface.
Demolition of the old curling rink commenced on June 2 with a completion date set of Sept. 30.
The new building, which will be erected within the next month, consists of a pre-engineered steel building. It was sent as a frame and individual parts and its assembly should be complete at the end of summer.
All projects should be complete by start of both curling and hockey seasons.
Town council is hopeful that the project will be completed as soon as the end of September.
