Ernest Nicolet was recognized by the town of Falher as the first centenarian in the town in a special ceremony on June 21.
“Council, in honour of dad’s 100th birthday decided to place a memorial in the bee park,” says Ernest’s son Gerard Nicolet.
“Dad was very moved by the dedication because it brought back memories of things that he’s been part of in the community.”
Ernest became a part of the community on June 1, 1940. His travels to reach his final destination of Falher are quite amazing.
“Dad moved to Canada from Switzerland in 1928,” explains Gerard. “He lived in the Morinville area until 1940 when he moved to Falher.”
Ernest has been an influential part of the community since 1940.
He owned a business, Nicolet Electric from 1943 - 1973, which was located where the bee park stands today. (Also a main reason they chose the site for the dedication.)
He was also an integral part of many groups in Falher and region including; Knights of Columbus, Falher Chamber of Commerce, Falher Lions Club, and the Smoky River Fish and Game society.
“He was instrumental in the construction of the log cabin (located next to the town of Falher building) with Gaston Mencke,” he says. “The dedication really showcases his participation as a resident of the town of Falher.”
Ernest contributed greatly to the community, also helping prosper the population by raising a large, young vibrant family in the community.
His nine children, six boys and three girls, were raised in Falher. Many of whom still live in the region.
He and his wife Jeanne (Lacourse) made Falher their home, also strengthening the community with their presence.
The dedication was presented by the town of Falher as a thank-you for Ernest’s commitment as well as his amazing feat of turning 100 years old.
The ceremony was held on June 21, with Mayor Margaret Tardif and Dunvegan-Central Peace MLA Hector Goudreau presenting Ernest with the plaque.
Ernest currently lives in the Manoir du Lac in McLennan.
His contributions are greatly appreciated by the town council and by residents from throughout the region.
