A Calgarian author made her way to McLennan Oct. 7 to talk about her fiction novels and the importance of life’s lessons.
Author Lorna Schultz Nicholson combines writing fiction with her passion for sports and her experience as a television co-host and reporter, radio host, actor, fitness coordinator and rowing coach.
She is based out of Calgary, where she lives with her husband Bob Nicholson, who is president of Hockey Canada and her three children.
Schultz Nicholson spoke to Ecole Providence students about her books, that deal with topics pertaining to their lives.
The books deal with issues of bullying, girls in sports, relationship choices, family and friendship dynamics, resolving conflicts, teamwork, group roles, as well as understanding and expressing feelings.
Her books are mainly about sports. Her hockey books are filled with action that she derives from her life experiences of travelling around the world attending hockey events.
She researches all of her facts from actual hockey players that she has personal contact with.
Schultz Nicholson is currently working on her eighth book in her hockey series called Holding, out this fall.
Her book Pink Power about the Women’s World Hockey Championships held in Ottawa in 1990 has gained great reviews.
Wayne Gretzky has been quoted as saying, “Lorna’s books are a great read for kids and their parents.
They really help teach the importance of having good values both in hockey and in life.”
She has won several awards recently, including the Canadian Children’s Book Centre Our Choice Award for two of her books, Interference and Roughing.
