Ducks Unlimited fundraiser brings in close to $18,000

Ducks Unlimited supper in McLennan on Oct. 18 featured auctioneer Roger Bourgeois. There were silent auctions, live auctions, and raffles throughout the evening. A highlight of the evening was Smoky River Ducks Unlimited director Dale Fish winning a Vanguard .300 Weatherby rifle with scope. This is the first time since Fish started supporting Ducks Unlimited over 20 years ago that he won something at the event. His grab was part of the Pick of the Litter draw.

The annual Smoky River Ducks Unlimited supper was held in McLennan at the Elks Hall on Oct. 18. Smoky River Ducks Unlimited chair Terry Dunne says the attendance was down substantially from last year. “It was a little disappointing to see fewer people this year,” says Dunne. “We still managed to raise awareness to the importance of Ducks Unlimited.” There was a silent auction and a live auction, as well as multiple raffles. All together the region’s Ducks Unlimited team raised about $18,000, down from last year when the auction raked in nearly $26,000. “Holding events like this for Ducks Unlimited helps to get the word out to protect wetlands,” says Dunne. “It’s really important for people to realize the impact eliminating marshes and natural water filters could have on waterfowl.” This year, Royal Purple donated the Elks Hall in McLennan for the night. They also donated room in the building to store items two weeks prior the event. “We are very thankful to the Royal Purple for donating the hall,” says Dunne. “It would be nice to be able to move the event around the region, but it is financially feasible to hold it in McLennan, thanks to their organization.” All items auctioned off at the event were brought in from Ducks Unlimited headquarters. Dunne says the items for the Pluck-a-duck and Duck Egg were donated from local companies. “It was great to see everyone having such a good time,” explains Dunne. “Hopefully next year will be as successful.” Dunne says Ducks Unlimited has had a chapter in the area for 22 years. He explains people are becoming very aware of how much the organization helps maintain pristine habitat for wildlife. Dunne and the Ducks Unlimited crew would like to thank everyone for their continued support, including caterers Helen Grammar and Elaine Smith.
