It seems the Falher Pirates may have found the team chemistry they yearned for in the 2007-2008 season.
Last year, the team managed to skate to five victories, just two fewer than they’ve already earned four games into the 2008-2009 hockey season.
The Pirates skated to a 10-3 victory over division foe High Prairie Regals on Nov. 7, much to the delight of nearly 300 fans.
Assistant captain Shawn Gervais says the team is increasingly confident in their game, which he says showed in their approach to the game.
“We came out with a lot of fire and spunk,” says Gervais. “We made them chase us and the result was a huge win.”
Special teams were top notch, with the Pirates killing off all three of the Regals power plays.
They also managed to score on three of their six power play opportunities.
Power play goals were made by Keith Reade, Jared Zawacki and Jean Marc Meunier.
Keith Reade was instrumental in the Pirates win with four goals and two assists, three of the goals came in the first period.
“Keith brings a different element to our game,” says Gervais. “He has brought a lot of character to our dressing room. He’s cocky, confident, and a strong forward.”
Other goals were added by Mitch Maisonneuve, captain Jason Bouchard and a pair of goals by Leo Giroux.
Gervais explains the team is playing with a lot of confidence this season.
He explains new players have helped to gel the team together, creating added chemistry on the ice.
Captain Jason Bouchard was also instrumental in the win, with a goal and four assists.
With only nine power plays in the game, the teams were given the opportunity to play even strength for the majority of the game.
Gervais says the team is on the right track to having a successful season.
Pirates are hoping their season continues on a similar note.
They have a difficult upcoming schedule with Grande Prairie Athletics, Fort St. John Flyers and Spirit River Rangers to play in December.
The team has gained confidence and are hoping to be well above .500 with the completion of the season.
With mainly return hockey players from last year, the team is confident this season they can make a run for the playoffs.
Leading the way in points is captain Jason Bouchard, who after four games has 18 points with six goals and 12 assists. Next up is forward Daniel Aubin who has scored nine goals and helped with five assists.
Next game is tomorrow against the Regals in High Prairie starting at 8:30 p.m.
