Falher Regional Recreation Complex has officially received the prizes from Falher’s win in the bid to become Hockeyville 2006. The competition was entered by Falher Recreation Board president Lorraine Desaulniers, Lise Cote and Jean Lemire in 2006 as part of an attempt to get extra funding for the complex when it was still in its beginning stages. Recreation coordinator Lise Cote explains the Falher Hockeyville team managed to tie for second place, winning $10,000 worth of equipment supplied by the NHLPA (National Hockey League Players Association). “We were given a catalogue by the NHLPA to spend our $10,000,” says Cote. “We had to spend all the funds on hockey equipment from the catalogue.” With the money, the recreation board decided to purchase a number of items, including four full sets of goalie equipment, 20 warm-up jersey for the Falher Pirates in both white and black, and both black and white jerseys for youth pond hockey. The recreation development society also purchased black hockey socks and elbow pads that can be purchased by phoning Lise Cote at 780-837-3212. “We are loaning out the equipment to hockey players from around the area,” says Cote. “Different individuals have borrowed the equipment. It will help their parents save money, instead of having to purchase their own equipment.” Cote explains the recreation board received the catalogues nine months after the completion of the Hockeyville competition. “Even after we were chosen as runners-up in Hockeyville, we still had to put an application in with the NHLPA to receive the $10,000 worth of equipment,” explains Cote. “They wanted to make sure we were eligible for the grants.” In addition to all the equipment, the recreation board directors were each given briefcases for their efforts. The recreation complex was given numerous puck bags, hockey stick bags, and numerous other hockey equipment items. “The equipment was received in April of this year,” says Cote. “We hope people will take the opportunity to borrow the equipment from the recreation complex instead of having to buy equipment on their own.” If you would like to borrow the equipment that was won through Hockeyville or would like to purchase the elbow pads or hockey socks, please phone Lise Cote at 780-837-3212.
