The North Peace Hockey League’s Lakeland Eagles finally appear to be finding their wings.
Lakeland made it two straight victories at home Dec. 4 by knocking off their arch rivals, the High Prairie Regals, 8-6 at H.W. Fish Arena.
One of the key factors attributed to the victory was the injection of several players into the lineup, including Jay Anderson and Junior Anderson, both of whom did their fair share of damage with four goals and seven points between them.
The game saw both teams go toe-to-toe in the first period with each club scoring three times for a 3-3 draw after the opening 20 minutes.
Lakeland outscored the Regals 3-1 in the middle frame on goals from Jay Anderson, Andrew Lamouche and Travis Chalifoux, who notched his second of the game with a power play marker at 19:29 to give his club a 6-4 lead heading into the third period.
Cory Reid of the Regals trimmed the lead to 6-5 at 6:58 of the final frame on a penalty shot after being hauled down on a partial breakaway before Jay Anderson restored the two-goal lead at 7-5 with his second of the game at 15:03.
Tyler Shantz would get that one back for the Regals with his third of the game at 17:15 but it wasn’t enough as Jay Anderson put the final nail in High Prairie’s coffin with an empty net goal in the dying second.
Also scoring for Lakeland was Claude Cunningham and Junior Anderson.
The win/loss came five days after a roster-depleted Eagles squad was convincingly tarred and feathered by Fort St. John, which cruised to an easy 15-2 victory at home on Nov. 29.
Lakeland, which trailed 3-1 after the first period and 9-2 after forty minutes, surrendered six more goals in the third period of the game and were out-shot by a lopsided margin of 48-12.
Scoring for Lakeland in the losing cause was Brett Cunningham and Lloyd Ah-Kim-Nachie.
Lakeland’s upcoming schedule this week includes a road game in Peace River on Thursday followed by a home match-up against the Grande Prairie Athletics on Saturday night.
Game time is 8:30 p.m.
