The Lakeland Eagles are slowly beginning to show signs of life following a disappointing first half of the North Peace Hockey League season.
Lakeland, the bottom dwellers in the East Division, continued to try and claw its way out of the league basement Jan. 10 after earning its fourth victory of the season, and first in three attempts this year against the visiting Falher Pirates.
And much of that success on the ice was credited to Eagles forward Craig Anderson, who had a banner night with five goals and one helper as Lakeland knocked off the Pirates 8-6.
The much-needed win came on a night which saw the Pirates lose the services of forward Daniel Aubin. Aubin left the game with a broken collarbone in the second period following a check.
It was also a game featuring one of the most improbable goals of the year; a hail mary slapshot off the stick of Pirates defenceman Tim Clayton from his own blueline which eluded Eagles goaltender Nelson Tallman at the 19:59 of the final period.
But even that wasn’t enough for Falher, which found itself in a deep 8-3 hole at the midway point of the third period before making the score respectable with three goals in the final five minutes of regulation play.
The game saw the Pirates draw first blood at 4:23 of the opening period on a goal from Evan Zawacki.
Lakeland would, however, rebound from the early 1-0 deficit by banging home three straight in the next 10 minutes for a 3-1 edge.
Scoring for the Eagles was C. Anderson with a pair and Lenny L’Hirondelle.
Falher trimmed the Eagles lead to 3-2 at the 18:36 when captain Jason Bouchard buried his first of two goals on the night.
Lakeland outscored the Pirates by a 3-1 margin in the middle frame on goals from C. Anderson (2) and Al Anderson. Replying for Falher was Ryan Hicks.
C. Anderson added his fifth of the night in the third period while Cory Ried notched his first.
Falher’s offence came from Bouchard, Logan Wittchen and Clayton.
Upcoming action will see Valleyview visit Lakeland Jan. 22, while the Pirates host Hirgh Prairie Jan. 23.
