Falher and Area Chamber of Commerce has planned its annual general meeting to discuss the future of the commerce council in Falher.
The meeting will be held at the Falher Restaurant Lounge beginning at 7 p.m. on March 25.
President Paula Guindon says the board is concerned with the decrease in numbers of board of directors who attend meetings.
“We will be analyzing the viability of the chamber at the AGM,” says Guindon. “We have a good membership but our board of directors is quite small.”
Guindon explains some of the directors are moving on to other endeavours. She says there is regularly only two or three members who are able to vote at the meetings.
“We’re considering the possibility of approaching other chambers in the region to amalgamate,” she says. “There is a lot of paperwork associated with chamber business and not enough people to help with the workload. Everyone on the board either has a business or is part of a business, so they are very busy doing their own work too.”
Guindon stresses this meeting will be an opportunity for members to step up to the plate and help the council make a decision on the chamber’s future.
Also on the agenda will be the new Falher Chamber of Commerce web page.
Council will discuss the construction of the web page, and what the page will mean to both board members and individuals within the community who have shown an interest in the chamber.
“We need chamber members input, so we need a decent number of members to attend the meeting,” says Guindon. “Last meeting there were only four or five members at the meeting and two of us could not vote because of our positions on the board.”
Guindon explains there are close to 50 members in the chamber, but there are fewer than six who sit on the board of directors.
“We have held a number of events that have been very successful,” she says.
“In order to maintain those events and find enough help to organize and hold them, we need to have more interest from chamber members.”
Some of the events the chamber has organized in the last year includes Santa Days, Moonlight Madness and they were also instrumental in running the beer gardens at the 2008 Honey Festival.
Guindon reminds Chamber of Commerce members that even if they cannot make it to the meeting, they can send a staff member on their behalf.
She says they are hoping to hear from chamber members to have new opinions and interests voiced at the meeting.
