Get ready for a thrilling weekend in March when the 2009 Atom C Provincial Championships come to Falher Regional Recreation Complex March 13 – 15.
A bid from local hockey parents proved to be the winning application from across Alberta.
Most notable in the application process is Smoky River Atoms’ Manager Wendy Tokarz, who has spent many hours planning the event.
Tokarz explains this is the first time Falher has been fortunate enough to hold the Atom Provincial Championship, and everyone is anxiously awaiting its arrival.
“Everybody is really excited that we are holding the event,” says Tokarz.
“Even people without kids are looking forward to watching some great hockey.”
Tokarz explains eight teams will be competing in the event. She says the Smoky River atom club automatically gets to play in the tournament because the host town is always entered into the competition.
“Our kids are so enthused after getting the information we’ll be hosting the provincials,” says Tokarz. “They are excited to play against teams from across Alberta.”
An estimated 600 spectators will be in the region over the weekend, establishing a great opportunity to showcase our communities, says Smoky River Minor Hockey Vice President James Andersen.
“We are hoping businesses will decorate their windows in support,” says Andersen. “Minor hockey is also suggesting businesses may want to offer specials at this time to attract visitors.”
The parent committee for the application process included Tokarz, Lynn Skrepnek, Lynda Turcotte, Gilbert Owens, Crystal Zarowny, and Lise Cote.
Volunteers will be needed for the three-day event. Help is still needed preparing food for the banquet, admission and 50/50 ticket sales.
“This is a skilled team with a lot of heart and character, despite their young age, they play an exciting brand of hockey,” says Andersen. “Come watch and cheer on your local hockey team.”
Game schedules will be published in upcoming issues of the Express.
Thus far, the MD of Smoky River and town of Falher have agreed to split the costs of arena rental for the weekend.
Many local businesses have also donated time or money towards the Smoky River Atoms efforts.
