Georges P. Vanier junior high school science fair March 5

Jean and Jaques Brochu won 1st place in the Grade 8 portion of the science fair for their project determining the effect of acid rain on germination. The brothers determined pH4 (most acid) didn’t grow, while pH 5.5 (original rain) did the best.

Kurtis Mader and Denis Berube tested what type of water boils the quickest. They discovered that sugar water with more minerals boiled the fastest. They also tested salt water, purified water, and tap water.

Melissa Roy and Kelsey Gorgichuk tested different candles to see how quickly the different brands burned. They tested different brands of candles from different stores. The candles included Gold Canyon candles from Bad Spirit Designs and Pomegranate candles, and candles from Bargain Store in Falher.

Georges P. Vanier Junior High students held their annual science fair on March 5.

The grade 7 and 8 students had various projects from the effects of acid rain on germination, which candle burned quickest and many other science related questions.

This year’s winners include:

Grade 7 –

First place: Tiana Aubin, Jamie Daubert and Darcie Benoit for their project on the effect of temperature on popcorn.

Second place: Suck it up! A project by Yvonne Brochu and Sydney Aubin.

Third place: The production of heat of several different types of wood. A project by Darren Laflamme and Ryan Aubin.

Grade 8 –

First place: The effect of acid rain on germination, a project by Jean and Jacques Brochu.

Second place: Freezing water by Jacob White and William Gervais.

Third place: Pykrete by Kylie Montpellier and Sara Desaulniers.

Teachers and staff at Georges P. Vanier would like to congratulate the grade 7 and 8 students on a job well done at the science fair.

They are also very pleased with the number of people from the community who went to the school on the evening of the science fair.

Vice principal Robert Owens explains it was difficult to judge all of the fantastic junior high science projects.
