Falher and Area Chamber of Commerce seeking new directors

Falher and Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for a new president.

At the chamber’s annual general meeting on March 25, Paula Guindon stepped down as the president.

“I will still be on as a director,” says Guindon. “The past president has to stay on for one year. My interest in the chamber has not changed, I just feel I do not have the time to dedicate to the president’s position.”

Chamber members are concerned with the future of the board. Many directors have stepped down this year, and as a result they are now three board members and a president short on the council.

“Overall there is not a very active membership contribution,” says Guindon. “We are hoping to get an increased interest in the chamber from business owners who are currently members.”

Secretary-treasurer Val Viens explains the council may have to look at alternatives to keep the chamber active.

“We are planning on visiting all the regional chambers to consider regionalising our efforts,” says Viens. “If we don’t find the necessary board members, we have no option but to look at regionalising.”

Viens explains she hopes to see a meeting between all the area chamber of commerce boards to reflect on what changes can be made to increase support and interest.

“We understand everybody is busy with their own businesses, but the chamber helps businesses,” says Guindon. “How are we supposed to do a good job when no one will step up to fill vacant spots?”

Guindon says the chamber is trying to only have one meeting per month, lasting only one hour, to accommodate individual’s busy schedules.

“None of the directors want to see the chamber fold,” says Guindon. “We really need some support from others in the community.”
