Cancer is a gripping disease that will affect each individual at some point in their life.
Whether its a family member, friend, or ourselves, we will know someone who has had to battle the life-threatening disease. Three Falher residents are urging fellow community members to help donate a little money to the fight to raise money for a cure.
Jocelyn Berube, Carmen Guindon and Nadine Brochu will be taking matters in their own hands on Aug. 8, raising money for the disease by participating in the Weekend to end Breast Cancer walk in Edmonton.
“Walking is easy but cancer is hard,” says Guindon, quoting a well known cancer fundraising slogan. “People who battle cancer are the real heroes in my heart, we need to help raise money. Lets conquer cancer together.”
The women have started a team for the walk this year called The Northern Boobs. They are hoping to raise a total of $4,000 for cancer research.
All three women have had family members battle the disease. They want to do their part to end cancer, and feel the walk will be a great way to help raise funds for cancer research.
“We all know someone who has either lived through or unsuccessfully battled cancer,” says Berube. “This walk is for all those people who’ve suffered through cancer. We hope one day our youth will only learn about the disease through history books, instead of having to deal with the sadness, sickness, and heartache that can come from battling cancer.”
Berube and her daughter Brochu will be walking the 35 km for Berube’s dad. She explains he was a three time survivor of cancer, until the disease took his life in the fourth bout of the disease.
This is the second walk Berube has participated in. She explains a knee injury has cut down her ability to walk the entire two-day event, but she is looking forward to walking 35 km of the 55 km total walked by participants.
Guindon is walking in honour of her father who recently passed away from cancer. She explains he had suffered for eight months before succumbing to the disease.
The walk will be held along the river valley trails in Edmonton. This year is the first year that a 35 km walk will also be available.
“We realize times are tough but we are looking for donations for our bid to end cancer,” says Berube. “Every amount helps whether small or large. Thanks to all those who’ve already supported us.”
If you would like to donate to Berube or Brochu please phone Jocelyn at 780-837-8364. Individuals wishing to contribute to Guindon can call her at 780-837-3409. You can also go online at www.endcancer.ca, click on donate and enter the recipient’s name. All proceeds will support breast cancer and other cancer research, treatment and services through Alberta Cancer Foundation.
