Alberta Health Services, the City of Grande Prairie and Grande Prairie’s Be Fit for Life Centre are teaming up to organize an event aimed at encouraging fitness and nutrition among girls.

Go Girl takes place on Saturday, April 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Grande Prairie Composite High School. Girls between the ages of 11-15 are invited to see and try a variety of activities including wall climbing, hip hop, self defence, triathlon training and eating for best performance. In addition to learning about these activities, they’ll receive information on nutrition and body image and have a chance to provide input on preferences to community programmers. It’s also a great chance to have fun, meet new people and make new friends!

The cost to attend is $15.00 (lunch and snacks are provided). Those interested can register online at www.cityofgp.com or by calling (780) 538-0455. The deadline to register is April 17.

Go Girl is targeting females between the ages of 11-15 because as a group, they are particularly prone to sedentary behaviour during puberty when their self-image and confidence levels are challenged.

In an Environics Poll conducted for the Canadian Paediatric Society in 2002, 62%of girls were found to be inactive compared to 54% of boys. Studies have also shown that exercise cuts the risk of breast cancer possibly as much as 37% and helps fight osteoporosis and obesity. In addition, girls’ early involvement in sports reduces their likelihood of developing all the above as well as heart disease and high cholesterol. Further, among the benefits linked to participation in physical activity are psychological well-being, positive family interactions, managing peer influences, improved academic performance and community involvement.

For more health information, call HealthLink, 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-866-408-LINK (5465).
