Be proud of your culture and learn every aspect you can about your family’s past, present, and future.
That’s the message sent to Providence School students in McLennan at the third Alberta Peace Regional Cultural Hand Games tournament on April 3.
The school welcomed 13 schools as far as Manning to take part in the Aboriginal hand games competition.
Teams had to successfully win in Grimshaw to compete at McLennan’s tournament. The game required students to hide buttons or rocks in their hands, which were hidden under blankets.
When prompted, the students had to lift their hands out of the blanket and reveal their selected hand.
If the student had a hidden prize in their hand when selected by the team captain, the team had to give up one of their 17 sticks to their opponents.
The first team to take all 17 sticks from their opponents won the game.
Students were required to chant and dance while playing the game.
The purpose was to find the people with hidden objects and obtain the sticks.
Providence School would like to thank all of the sponsors from High Prairie, Slave Lake, Falher, and McLennan, who helped to make the event especially spectacular for the children. Sponsors included KFC, Daishowa–Marubeni International Ltd., Slave Lake Region 5 metis office, Knights of Columbus, Falher CO–OP, Falher IGA, Falher Holdings Liquor Store, Falher Glass and Locksmith, Hicks Honey, McLennan IDA, Kimiwan Konfectionary, McLennan Bottle Depot, Bisson Brothers, Natalie Laboucan, Royal Purple, Providence Parent Council and GT Electric.
Elementary group winners were the Providence School Eagles. Junior High winners were the Grouard School Cobras.
