When a friend battles cancer, one is always unsure of how they can help to ease the stress and pain associated with the disease.
For a group of Smoky River residents, the answer was quite clear when their friend Brenda Moore was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Lynn Florence, Elaine Moore, Roger Moore, Mona Moore and Jacqueline Maisonneuve will be walking during the Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Brenda’s honour. Hilda Grenier will also be participating as a crew member during the two-day long walk from Aug. 8 – 9 in Edmonton.
“Brenda is a coworker and friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer late last year,” says Jacqueline Maisonneuve. “She has just finished chemotherapy treatments and has a few other procedures to endure.”
Maisonneuve explains the team, appropriately named Fern’s Greenhouse (many of the team members work at the greenhouse), decided to walk in Brenda’s honour after talking to one of Maisonneuve’s relatives who walked the event last year.
“Last fall, shortly after she was diagnosed, we decided to do the walk,” Maisonneuve says. “Each walker is responsible for raising $2,000.”
Fern’s Greenhouse team will be holding fundraisers throughout the next few months to raise money for their walk. The team is currently doing a bottle drive and will announce further fundraisers that will be held at Fern’s Greenhouse located north of Girouxville.
The team is requesting individuals to help them raise enough funds to walk the 60 km walk in August.
If you are interested in donating to the team, you can visit www.endcancer.ca, click on Edmonton, and put the walker’s name or team name in to donate.
You can also donate to individual team members or phone Fern’s Greenhouse at 780-323-4420.
All proceeds go to breast cancer and other women’s cancers. The money helps to fund research, care and treatment.
