Smoky River Regional Airport south of Donnelly caters to surrounding communities for both personal use and professional use.
The airport currently is running at a deficit of $31,900. This deficit has been accumulated since 2006.
In 2006, the airport accrued an $1,180 deficit, the next year had an additional deficit of $20,000 and last year the airport ran a deficit of $11,500.
“Costs are continually increasing to run the airport,” says MD of Smoky River Director of Corporate Services Rita Therriault. “Maintenance and supplies have sky-rocketed in the past few years causing the costs to be quite a bit higher.”
The airport also accepts landings from the medi-vac and Stars Air Ambulance.
Whitemud protective circles
Less than two months after Municipal District of Smoky River council decided to keep protective circles around the Whitemud Community Hall, the Community Hall committee approached council to eliminate them.
“Council held the first reading to a bylaw to remove the protective circles,” says Therriault. “A public hearing will be held in June to determine if the circles will be removed or not.”
The hall committee says they’ve come to terms with the Hudderite Colony who purchased surrounding land and have decided to take the circles off.
The committee will now have to look for a new location for a potential new Whitemud Community Hall.
They also explained at the MD meeting that cost is a major issue when discussing building a new hall.
The public hearing will be held on June 1 in the Municipal District of Smoky River council chamber.
