Town of McLennan has begun the first development on their agenda, with a house constructed by MoCon Industries, due to be complete this summer.
Town administrator Tammy Stout explains the design is a Home Hardware package called Applecroft being built on 55 Boufield.
“Will Moses and his team are currently constructing the house,” says Stout. “After complete, we will be building another home on 46 Macmillan.”
Initial plans by the Town of McLennan were to build multiple homes along the College Meadows, but due to some legal matters, the construction has been put on a temporary hold.
More information will be gathered and released at a meeting at the end of this week.
“We have to rectify the legal issues before we can proceed with development of the College Meadows,” says Stout.
Economic Development
Economic Development David Kane was invited to the regular meeting on April 20 to discuss projects currently underway.
The largest impact directed at the Town of McLennan is the possibility of the community housing the new childcare centre, if plans are carried out.
“We have many large businesses in town, including the hospital, social services, and CN,” says Stout. “Kane feels McLennan may be a logical place for the childcare centre if there is adequate space.”
Smoky River Regional Golf Course
The Smoky River Regional Golf Society visited town council on April 20 with information about their financial situation and plans for the upcoming year.
President Patricia Bacon, past-president Oma Casault, and Michele Dubrule were on hand to give specs for this year’s golf season.
“They made a presentation to council a couple of months ago, asking us for a donation for one of the golf course’s holes,” says Stout. “We requested they bring a financial statement before we considered donating to the society.”
The society came back to council with a financial statement, requesting a loan for six months to purchase a required hood above the cooking range. This hood was required after a fire inspection to remain open.
“Council decided to donate $4,000 to the society to purchase the required part,” says Stout. “They have also decided to use the money as part of our sponsorship for the driving range.”
The golf society has many plans for the upcoming golfing season in McLennan.
They plan on creating a golf course that will be ultimately very impressive in the Smoky River Region. The group feels the golf course has much to offer the region and people from surrounding areas.
“The history of the golf course is quite impressive,” said Patricia Bacon at the town council meeting. “In 1979, a group of golf enthusiasts started to plan the local golf course. In 1983, a nine hole course in McLennan was completed.”
Bacon says the course is used by seniors, youth, and adults from around the Smoky River Region and surrounding areas, including Peavine.
She explained the last few years there have been fewer golfers and more machinery to fix. Last year, the society had to fix both the Gator and fairway machine.
The society’s 2009 business plans include improving the greens and fairways. They are hoping to increase the challenge of the course, and to replace the irrigation system.
Most of the greens were replaced from the original synthetic material to a natural grass green. The society’s goal is to replace two more of the synthetic greens, which are located on hole numbers five and seven.
The bridge replacement is also a project currently underway.
Maintaining tee-off boxes for aesthetics and sponsorship has been a goal for the society this year.
Michele Dubrule has been instrumental in finding businesses to sponsor each hole on the nine-hole golf course.
Currently, business have sponsored each hole. The women explained the tee-off station will have a plaque dedicated to whichever business had sponsored that particular hole.
At the meeting, the group were happy to hear the town council decided to help support the payment of a required kitchen item. Thus, they’ve decided to give the sponsorship of the driving range to the Town of McLennan.
Maintenance of the clubhouse was also discussed at the meeting.
To meet fire regulations, a fire extinguishing apparatus was required for the fans in the kitchen of the clubhouse.
The town of McLennan donated $4,000 for the fire extinguisher and sponsorship of the driving range.
“We have been working very hard to upgrade the clubhouse this year,” said Bacon. “A group of people have volunteered their time to help get our clubhouse into good condition.”
The clubhouse will be undergoing a major facelift in the next little while.
Plans are to repaint the walls throughout the clubhouse. They are also planning to install new carpets.
Currently, they’ve ripped out the old carpets and begun to paint the walls in the building.
A long-term goal of the society is to purchase rental clubs and other equipment for the drop-in golfers.
A major concern for the society is to improve the turf grass. One idea of the society is to find a maintenance person/manager to learn the ropes of maintaining a golf course, and to ensure the smooth running of the course.
