Girouxville resident Diane Dolhan is tying her shoelaces, packing the water bottles and gearing up for the Weekend to End Breast Cancer on the weekend of Aug. 8 and 9.
She is participating in the walk raising money for cancer research in honour of her mom, Evelyne Lefebvre.
“My mom was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer in Nov. 2008,” says Diane. “She just underwent a mastectomy and will be receiving radiation treatments. I felt I needed to do something to help her. Well, here is a way that everyone can help her and the many more women and families who are going through this horrible disease.”
In order to participate in the 60 km walk, Diane was required to meet a $2,000 pledge minimum.
She held a garage sale in early May, which she managed to raise over $1,000.
With help from individuals who dropped off items around the region, Diane says she has reached her goal of raising $2,000.
On May 27 at Five Star Golf Course, a Ladies Night was held as a part fundraiser for the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. The 52 women managed to raise $2,065.
The next night, Men’s Night gathered $2,625 between 54 men.
“Thanks to the Five Star staff, Rita Lapensee, Denis Simard and everyone that participated,” says Diane. “I have no reached my goal pledge.”
Diane says she will still be accepting donations before the walk, which she will pass on to the Fern’s Greenhouse team.
Many teams from throughout the Smoky River region are participating in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer.
Nearly 1,900 Albertans are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and Diane explains most people know someone who has battled cancer, either surviving or succumbing to the disease.
