Up Front - Can you imagine a world without humans?
Emily Plihal

I often dream about what the world would look like if human beings could not make the impact we make on a daily basis.
My favourite retreat is often deep in the bush, where few others have been. Some of my favourite hunting spots, even in the area, are still untouched by bulldozers and other equipment. Moss grows on the ancient trees, animals are unsure of the human scent, and life seems to be more peaceful and at ease.
Not that any of us would see life without humans, unless you believe in being reincarnated into a bear, bird, fish or other animal, but imagine how amazing our earth would look without the damage we inflict.
There would be no question of whether or not nuclear plants are hazardous to the environment, no animal would be shot for attacking a human or invading a human’s territory, the natural food chain would be the only precedence.
There would not be a constant battle to keep up with the Joneses. Our world would be peaceful and unscathed.
Verbal fights would no longer exist. World wars over religion and politics wouldn’t be a question. Petty problems would not have to be voiced, because there would be no human voices.
Each and every human being makes a great impact on the earth. We cut trees for land, we use non-renewable resources to heat our homes or run our vehicles, and some of us throw out recyclable items.
I can just picture how beautiful this planet would be without us. In my mind, the land in Canada would be covered by great big spruce, creeks, rivers and lakes.
Animals would have free reign and their life would change immensely. They would no longer be pushed out of their territory by humans with CATS knocking down their habitat.
Petty problems would no longer exist. Whether or not a certain girl is wearing the same shirt as another, or whether some girl is dating your ex-boyfriend, or any of those other trivial, childish “problems” will be eliminated.
In this utopia, I think I’d like to come back as a black bear. I’d wander the bush happily searching for berries, wild onions, and other food. I wouldn’t be concerned about anything beyond where I’d sleep all winter long.
My goal in life would be to become as fat as possible, a negative in the human race. I’d spend my days basking in the glory of warmth from the sun. Life would no longer be hectic or trying.
Our current world is filled with a lot of negative aspects that sculpt how individuals live their lives. Religions, politics, and “feelings” cause wars of great magnitude that should be eliminated.
In my utopia, the only wars that would occur would be between animals fighting for food, shelter, or protecting their young.
Do I disagree with progress? Of course not, it’s how the human population thrives. However; the thought of a more peaceful serene lifestyle is exhilarating. I don’t believe this kind of peace can be obtained with humans on earth.
We have developed into a society that is more concerned about the materialistic things than what the world has to offer naturally.
I wish we could take a step back and realize how much we’ve missed by focussing on development.
