Cancer is a gripping disease that will affect each individual at some point in their life.

Whether its a family member, friend, or ourselves, we will know someone who has had to battle the life-threatening disease.

This is among many of the reasons three teams from the Smoky River Region participated in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer on Aug. 8 and 9.

The marathon walkers managed to raise an amazing $27,069.06 between their three teams, which will go a long way to help with cancer research.

Fern’s Greenhouse

Lynn Florence, Elaine Moore, Roger Moore, Mona Moore and Jacqueline Maisonneuve were walking in honour of Brenda Moore. Hilda Grenier also participated as a crew member during the two-day long walk from Aug. 8 – 9 in Edmonton.

“Brenda is a coworker and friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer late last year,” says Jacqueline Maisonneuve. “She has just finished chemotherapy treatments and has a few other procedures to endure.”

Maisonneuve explains the team, appropriately named Fern’s Greenhouse (many of the team members work at the greenhouse), decided to walk in Brenda’s honour after talking to one of Maisonneuve’s relatives who walked the event last year.

“Last fall, shortly after she was diagnosed, we decided to do the walk,” Maisonneuve says.

The team managed to raise an amazing $12,195.

Northern Boobs

Jocelyn Berube, Carmen Guindon and Nadine Brochu took matters in their own hands on Aug. 8, raising money for the disease by participating in the walk.

“Walking is easy but cancer is hard,” says Guindon, quoting a well known cancer fundraising slogan. “People who battle cancer are the real heroes in my eyes, we need to help raise money. Lets conquer cancer together.”

The women appropriately named their team The Northern Boobs.

All three women have had family members battle the disease. They want to do their part to end cancer, and felt the walk was a great way to help raise funds for cancer research.

“We all know someone who has either lived through or unsuccessfully battled cancer,” says Berube. “This walk is for all those people who’ve suffered through cancer. We hope one day our youth will only learn about the disease through history books, instead of having to deal with the sadness, sickness, and heartache that can come from battling cancer.”

Berube and her daughter Brochu walked the 35 km for Berube’s dad. She explains he was a three time survivor of cancer, until the disease took his life in the fourth bout of the disease.

This is the second walk Berube has participated in. She explains a knee injury has cut down her ability to walk the entire two-day event, but she was excited to walk 35 km of the 55 km total walked by participants.

Guindon walked in honour of her father who recently passed away from cancer. She explains he had suffered for eight months before succumbing to the disease.

The walk was held along the river valley trails in Edmonton. This year was the first year that a 35 km walk will also be available.

The women raised $7,749.56.

Diane Lefebvre

Girouxville resident Diane Dolhan geared up her running shoes, as she raised money for cancer research in honour of her mom, Evelyne Lefebvre.

“My mom, Evelyne Lefebvre, was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer in Nov. 2008,” says Diane. “She is currently doing chemotherapy, has undergone a mastectomy and radiation. I felt I needed to do something to help her. Well, here is a way that everyone can help her and the many more women and families who are going through this horrible disease.”

In addition to walking 60 km and meeting the $2,000 pledge minimum, Diane held a garage sale as a fundraiser for cancer research.

Diane and her mom walked the two-day jaunt together.

“Cancer is hard, walking isn’t”

The ladies managed to gather $7,7124.50.
