The Town of McLennan is developing an Integrated Sustainable Community Plan and council is requesting feedback from residents.
A questionnaire will be circulated in upcoming weeks to see what residents currently think about the community.
“We are hoping to have as many back as possible from our residents,” says McLennan CAO Tammy Stout. “If anybody has additional ideas we are requesting they send their ideas in writing or email to the town.”
The long term planning document will provide the town with a view towards long term sustainable development for the next 20 years. The document gives a definition of sustainability as “planning for the needs of today without compromising the needs of future generations”.
Town of McLennan is conduction the Integrated Sustainability Plan to receive funding from the New Deal fo Cities and Communities (NDCC) program, also known as the Gas Tax Fund. According to the federal-provincial agreement, all municipalities must complete the plan by March 10, 2010.
The NDCC program will provide financial assistance to municipalities to be used for sustainable capital municipal infrastructure to maintain or enhance economic, social and cultural opportunity.
Funding is based on each community’s population.
“Capital projects that can be funded through this program include public transit systems, water and wastewater systems, solid waste management, community energy systems, and community capacity buildings,” says Stout.
For smaller communities, under 500,000 in population, the money may also be used to fix municipal roads and bridges that enhance sustainability outcomes.
Information gathered from the questionnaire includes how long the resident has lived in McLennan and the age groups of the people in the home.
Other questions will gather the resident’s opinion about the economy, society, available recreation and culture, and the environment.
Residents will be asked to rate which of the following are most important: industrial development, appealing downtown core, tourism, population growth, expanded retail choices, affordable housing, or adequate land base.
Other questions include: Do you feel McLennan is a safe place to live? Do you feel we have adequate housing available? Do you volunteer your time for different organizations or events in town?
The questionnaire also asks residents which of the recreational opportunities they find most important. These include the tennis court, golf course, curling rink, arena, baseball diamonds, playground, campground and walking paths.
Other information gathered will help see if residents are using recycling bins and if there is a need for recycling services in McLennan.
McLennan town council asks all residents to complete the survey and return it to the town office as soon as possible. If you would like to provide additional feedback to the town, please call the town office at 780-324-3065.
