There’ll be a new kind of winter fun to try on the slopes at Little Smoky Ski Hill this year.
The ski hill is building a new run for snow tubing. Clem Bourgeois, ski hill manager, says tubing is growing in popularity across the province.
“We saw some terrain that would work well, so we decided to maximize our area by adding a tube run,” says Bourgeois.
Tube runs rely on gravity, and work like a giant slide. The new tube run will have four lanes.
“There is zero skill required, just come out there and have fun,” says Bourgeois. “It’s a safe thing to keep kids busy, another reason for the kids to come out.”
The total cost of the project will be $150,000. The new run is being made possible by cooperation from the M.D. of Greenview, the M.D. of Smoky River and the M.D. of Big Lakes. The province also chipped in with a $75,000 CIP grant for the project.
After three years of planning, construction is scheduled to start on the tube run by the beginning of October.
The trees in the tube run area have already been cleared.
“We ordered our lift from Germany and it is now being shipped by sea,” says Bourgeois. “It’s called a multi-lift and it’s designed for tubes. It has a handle pull and will pull the tubes up, so you’ll be sitting in the tube.”
The ski hill is currently looking for contractors to complete the new run.
“We’re looking for contractors to haul or move dirt, and fencing contractors to install a chain link fence,” Bourgeois says.
The tube run should be done in December as long as the ski hill can find contractors to do the work.
