Smoky River Family and Community Support Services will be featuring a community favourite again this fall.

Ol’ Tyme Family Nite will be kicking off again on Sept. 11 from the Elks’ Hall in McLennan.

“Musicians, dancers, singers and anyone who wants to socialize are invited to come out for a fun-filled night,” says FCSS event coordinator Jean Moore.

The evening will being at 7:30 p.m.

McLennan Royal Purple will be sponsoring the first Ol’ Tyme Family Nite Friday of the month. All proceeds will be going towards renovations to the Elks Hall.

The third Friday of the month will see Ol’ Tyme Family Nite at the Jean Cote Community Hall. A potluck supper will be featured at 6:30 p.m., followed by a dance at 7:30 p.m.

Seniors’ Fall Fair

A special fall fair will be held for seniors in September, to help celebrate their spirituality, health, and age.

The Seniors’ Fall Fair will be held from the Girouxville Community Hall on Sept. 15.

Family and Community Support Services event planner Jean Moore explains the event is held every year to celebrate the seniors in the area.

“We will have 20 booths with displays available with seniors information,” says Moore. “These booths will provide information to the seniors about a variety of items of their interest.”

Moore explains these booths will include information on home care, transportation, special senior clothing and health.

“We will also be holding four sessions in this year’s fall fair,” says Moore. “There will be Reiki drumming, spiritual artistry and an aboriginal elder providing spiritual piping and prayer.”

Moore explains the fourth sessions is still in the works.

There will be a free lunch included in the day.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. and will remain open until 3 p.m.

No charge will be given to the seniors who participate in this year’s fall fair.

“We will be providing rides to and from the fall fair,” says Moore.

“The community van will be running and will be using its usual pick-up points in McLennan, Donnelly and Falher.”

Moore explains the day helps to make seniors more aware that we need to have a healthier lifestyle to enjoy progressing age.

She says people are living for many more years than in the past, and to maintain a healthy happy lifestyle we must find new avenues of interest.

“It is so important we participate in more things as we age,” says Moore, who mentioned a senior from southern Alberta who sky-dives. “There is so much to do in this world and we should have more opportunities to do them.”

Alberta Arts Days

Alberta Arts Days will be held September 18 to 20, “to showcase Alberta artists of all types, and to encourage Albertans to discover, experience and celebrate the arts,” according to the Government of Alberta’s Culture and Community Spirit website.

Smoky River FCSS wants to help showcase the artistic talent of those in the Smoky River Region. Artists are being asked to come out and display their talents.

These talents can include any avenue of art, including woodwork, drawing, quilting, painting, photography, or any other form of art.

For more information about any of the above events, please phone the Smoky River FCSS office at 780-837-2220.
