The M.D. of Smoky River has joined suit with Falher and proclaimed May 29, 2010 the Day of the Honey Bee.
The proclamation was made at the Sept. 22 special meeting of council. The M.D. joins 27 other municipalities across Canada to date who have already agreed to recognize a honey bee day.
“I have not always believed that one person could change the world but because of the honey bee, I can never again have that view-point,” says Clinton Ekdahl, who has made it his personal crusade to contact every municipality in Canada and ask them to proclaim a day in honour of the bee. “This project has been a tremendous source of inspiration and strength for me because I have set a goal that I at first thought not possible to achieve. Yet, I am achieving more even than I thought I could.”
Ekdahl says he can’t thank the people of Falher and the M.D. of Smoky River enough for helping recognize the importance of the honey bee. He hopes that more people will understand the bee’s importance as a pollinator of the food we eat.
“If there are any out there that now know more about honey bees than they did before, then I have succeeded.”
In Alberta, the M.D. of Northern Lights No. 22 and the towns of Peace River, Botha, and Manning have also agreed to proclaim bee day, joining nine municipalities in Saskatchewan, five municipalities in Ontario, four municipalities in British Columbia and Saint Pierre de Lamy in Quebec.
But Ekdahl hopes many more municipalities across Canada will recognize the humble bee by May 29 of next year.
“How much more icing on the cake will we see by May 29, 2010?” he asks. “The truth is, I think I should bake another cake!”
