If you are interested in body art, a new business in Falher may be just what you are looking for.
Badspirit Designs has just expanded its business becoming Badspirit Designs and Tattoos. Owner Mark Stabler explains his wife saw some demand for a tattoo artist in the area, a trade Mark has dabbled in since the late 70s.
“About a year and a half ago, Heather asked why I didn’t get back into tattooing in the area,” says Stabler. “I started working out of the house after talking to a health inspector about the ins and outs of requirements.”
Stabler explains he felt moving the tattoo shop into a retail outlet would better suit the needs of his clientele, as well as his family.
“It took about three months to get approval from the health inspector to move into the Badspirit Designs and Tattoos building north of Radio Shack,” says Stabler.
Stabler has been tattooing a total of almost three years, but has had a passion for the body art since the late 70s.
He began his career in Saskatoon in 1979, apprenticing under a tattoo artist in the city.
“Of course career changes dictate life’s changes,” says Stabler. “I entered the army and gave up tattooing for the time being.”
Stabler explains beginning the tattoo shop again in Falher was definitely a dream of his. He explains he wanted to ensure all health protocol was followed to a T, communicating often with health inspectors.
“The health inspectors were great, giving a list of things that we had to do to get our shop in order for a tattoo shop,” he says. “We officially opened in August.”
Stabler explains he is a really good graphic artist and has a great computer program to help ensure the customer is getting exactly what they want.
“I can add, eliminate or change things on drawings to suit a customer’s desires,” says Stabler. “My experience in the past 15 years with silk screening has helped my eye get better at detecting the intricacies of the tattoo world.”
Stabler explains the cost of tattoos vary depending on size and amount of detail. He explains other locations he has visited charge about $140 per hour. He explains he charges a reasonable amount of money to his customers to ensure they have a good experience.
“The cost of the tattoo will vary,” says Stabler. “An average piece costs between $150 and $300, depending on the size and the complexity of the tattoo.”
Stabler explains he takes the time to help a customer decide exactly what they want, and says he doesn’t want to rush anybody through a tattoo.
He will spend time to tweak and perfect the tattoo you are putting on your body to ensure it is going to be exactly what you want.
Stabler explains customers should be completely prepared when getting a tattoo. He urges potential customers to drop in and talk about tattooing with him if they are at all sceptical.
Some recommendations for first-time tattoo enthusiasts include: thinking about your hobbies, memorable events, or other times in life that have impacted you. Make sure to research via the internet or the library.
Share your ideas with your tattoo artist and make sure you are both on the same track. Stabler explains when a tattoo is decided on, he will draw the tattoo and get the customer to approve or make change to the tattoo.
A $75 deposit is required for all tattoo appointments. You will be given a receipt and the rest is due on the tattoo date.
Walk-ins are welcomed to Badspirit Designs and Tattoos.
“If you are ready to go, have a good idea of what you want, we’re ready to go too,” says Stabler.
Payments are accepted via debit card or cash. Stabler reminds customers not to go to a tattoo appointment on an empty stomach.
