Quit worrying about potential ailments

Emily Plihal
for Smoky River Express

Why are we always so worried about things we cannot control?

I think human beings are automatically programmed to be concerned about things that don’t really apply to us.

Take for example the H1N1 virus. Sure, we could come down with the flu that has seen its share of deaths and major illness.

However; that particular flu has only caused a handful of deaths in Canada in comparison to the flu virus we experience each year.

It has clearly been documented that each year approximately 13,000 people die of the flu. Why are we not as worried about the “common flu” as we are about the “swine flu”?

Sure, we don’t know as much about the swine flu as a common flu, but each tiny community across North America is now prepared for the swine flu.

I was recently at the doctor’s office, and the doctor told me even in Falher they are prepared at the medical centre for the potential swine flu outbreak.

As humans we worry about every tiny aspect of our lives. Is it really necessary?

If you are a believer of any type of religion, most of our lives are already pre-determined. Doesn’t that mean if we are going to die Dec. 30, 2013, we are going to die?

Sure, we may not die of the particular death we could have, but it is “written in our cards” that we will die that day.

Perhaps a car will run us over, or we’ll be in a plane crash, or we’ll die of any other number of diseases that run rampant in our world.

Why are we so consumed by ailments? Why can’t we just live our lives to the fullest and forget about what could potentially kill us?

I think it’s high time we all just be happy. Take care of our families and friends like each day is the last. As corny and cliché as that sounds, I think it may be the best approach to life.

If any of you are like me, we have a world full of hypochondriacs.

If I hear a friend has the swine flu, I automatically think that I’m going to get it. I start planning for the “what ifs”.

It’s not only H1N1 that we are consuming ourselves with. It is good to be prepared, but we should not be stressing ourselves out about the “could happens.”

Life is full of unexpected events, and that is what makes life so fulfilling.

Take a quick look at life as it is right now. Are you happy? Are your children happy? Is your spouse happy?

Then that is all that matters. Beyond the what ifs and could happens there is reality.

Right now is what matters the most. Don’t stress about tomorrow, worry about today while planning to be careful tomorrow.

Take care of what actually can be controlled. Your finances, for one, can be in order for tomorrow. Cut your credit cards up and only live on your budget, that is something you can control.

Be proud of who you are, no matter who you are.

If you are a successful business person, a teacher, a ditch digger... be happy with your life, after all you are alive.

Quit the excess baggage of being disappointed with tomorrow. Be proud of who you are and the rest will take care of itself.

Now, on that note... quit worrying about “potentially” getting sick. Get out there and live your life to its highest potential, we’re all watching you.
