Local teen Taylor Cote has worn a number of different hockey jerseys in his short life, but the newest edition may pave his way to a professional hockey career.
The 15-year-old Falher resident, son of Darren and Lise Cote, has officially made the Grande Prairie Storm team, a goal his mom says he’s been working very hard to achieve.
“t's great to see him rewarded for his dedication,” says Lise, who clearly displays how proud she is of her teenaged son. “He spent his summer focussed on this goal (making the Storm team).”
In an interview with the Herald-Tribune, Taylor explained what it’s like to make the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) team.
“It’s been a childhood dream and it’s becoming a reality,” he told Tribune staff.
Taylor is one of two hockey players 16 years or younger who are currently playing for the Storm, the other is Tyson Ness.
The last time a 16-year-old played for the Storm was two seasons ago, when Tanner Fritz played 28 games.
Taylor’s mom proudly stated, “Taylor beat the Oct. 15 deadline, he’s 15 years old, he’s wearing number 15 and the Storm are in their 15th AJHL season.”
Storm coach Mike Vandekamp had many praises readily available for Taylor in his interview with the Tribune.
“Taylor is going to turn into a really, really good power forward,” he says. “He has so much potential.”
Taylor will not turn 16 until Nov., but his size is comparable to many of his teammates, which is a true benefit when playing with hockey players two years or more older.
As of publication, Taylor had played a total of 11 games, contributing two goals and one assist.
Instilled with great values from his parents, the power forward is trying to keep up with his academic studies by attending Peace Wapiti Academy, which Lise says can be difficult when on the road.
Athletic, ambitious, and determined, Taylor’s goal on the Grande Prairie Storm website is to “Live a financially secure life”.
One of four children, Taylor’s hockey career is just beginning. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess, but it’s quite clear that he will have a successful AJHL career as he is quickly gaining respect from around the league.
