Routhier School students ready to set a Guiness World Record

Routhier students will testing their skills tomorrow as they try to set a new Guiness World Record.

The students, ranging in ages from kindergarten to grade six, will be competing in sport stacking with 1,500 other schools from around the world in an effort to earn a new world record.

“Twenty-two countries will be taking part in the competition,” says Stack Up! organizer and Routhier teacher Dana Wood-Boissonneault. “It is really amazing what can be done with the stacking cups.”

The fourth annual sport-stacking event will take place tomorrow, Nov. 12 from Ecole Routhier School’s small gym beginning at 12:25 p.m.

Approximately 100 stackers will be on hand for the elementary students to partake in the challenge.

According to a brochure from the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA), Sport Stacking is an exciting individual and team sport that is becoming a popular trend in mainstream America. Originally invented in the early 80s in Southern California, it was originally known as “cup stacking”.

WSSA director Mark Lingle explains the Guiness event is a great platform to bring together sport stackers across the globe.

“Sport stacking is an activity enjoyed by all ages and cultures,” says Lingle. “It promotes hand-eye coordination, fitness, teamwork, speed and lots of fun.”

Last year, 222,560 stackers representing 1,343 schools from around the world stacked together to set a new world record.

This year, a challenge has been set to have 250,000 children from around the world stack at the same time.

Wood-Boissonneault explained one child in the United States has earned a world title for completing the stacking in under six seconds.

“Parents can see exactly what sport stacking is all about by visiting the WSSA website,” says Boissonneault.

“They have video tape of various stackers playing the game.”

WSSA promotes the standardization and advancement of sport stacking worldwide. Founded in 2001, they explain their association serves as the governing body for sport stacking rules and regulations, and provides a uniform framework for sport stacking events and sanctions sport stacking competitions and records.

The competition is being sponsored by Wonderful Pistachios.
