A new daycare proposed for Falher won’t be up and running by the New Year.
The Smoky Regional Childcare Society had hoped the daycare would be open and ready to accept children by early 2010. The daycare has been delayed due to lack of funding.
President Tina Fournier says the daycare society had applied for a “Making Spaces” grant through Canadian Family Services Authority (CFSA) Region 8.
“We have been told funding will be put on hold pending additional funding in the 2010 budget,” says Fournier.
“CFSA has told us there are many communities working on creating child care spaces so there are more requests than money available.”
The society is now looking for other grants and available funding.
“We have put a lot of work into this and we’re not giving up early,” Fournier promises.
A survey distributed by the society in September showed there was a need for 38 childcare spaces in Falher. The society needed to show that at least 24 spaces would be filled to make the daycare both viable and sustainable.
The Smoky Regional Childcare Society is still working on licensing their facility at École Routhier for the operation of a daycare.
Fournier says licensing includes a program plan, an operational plan, a staffing plan, as well as policies and procedures.
“We still welcome others to join our board,” she adds.
All parents who participated in the daycare survey and expressed interest in daycare spaces will be kept updated by the society through the contact information parents provided on the survey.
Anyone interested in joining the board can call Tina Fournier at 780-837-6154 .
Fournier says she is also happy to answer questions anyone may have about the daycare.
