The Smoky River Taekwondo Club travelled to Whitecourt to take part in the Whitecourt Taekwondo 20th Annual Invitational Championship on Sept. 23.

Three students took part in the invitational including black belt Alain Johnson, blue stripe belt Olivier Roy and white belt Leslie Boissonneault.

Johnson placed first in the mens’ black belt heavyweight sparring division, Roy finished second in the blue-strip boys 10–12 year old category, and Boissonneault finished first in both patterns and sparring for white belt girls 12–14.

“Among the noted honoured guests were Grandmaster Young Sun Kim, Taekwondo professor from the Yonsei University in Korea,” says Johnson. “Master Ji Won Jang was also there, he is an Olympic gold medalist in the 57 kg division at the Athen games in 2004.”

Johnson explains both masters were offered a four hour technical and theory taekwondo clinic on Sunday, which Alain and his wife Shaylene participated in.

“Master kim discussed with us some of the important aspects of Taekwondo in the world while developing the Taekwondo spirit,” says Johnson. “He also taught proper techniques regarding patterns.”

Johnson says Master Jang held a two our Olympic-style training seminar and discussed the mental requirements to prepare for a world class event.

Taekwondo is widely recognized as a sport that will enhance self-esteem, build confidence, develop discipline, teach self-defense and strengthen your mind and body.
