Chaibos family receives 2009 Northlands/AMA Farm Family Award

Terry and Melissa Chaibos received the 2009 Farm Family Award.
The objective of this prestigious award, now co-sponsored by AMA is to recognize outstanding farm families who best exemplify the value of the family farm to our rural communities.
The M.D. of Smoky River is allowed to nominate a worthy farm family every two years to receive the Northlands/AMA Farm Family Award. In 2009, M.D. Council chose to nominate Terry and Melissa Chaibos, the farm operation includes their daughters Erin, Stacey and Hailey as well as Terry’s father Joe Chaibos.
The nomination is made by M.D. Council, but the final decision rests with the Northlands organization, which scrutinizes each nomination to make certain the family is worthy of this prestigious award. There was no question in our minds, with the phenomenal past and present community involvement of the whole family, as well as the innovative farming techniques employed by the Chaibos family that Northlands would accept the M.D.’s nomination, and they did.
Terry and Melissa’s involvement in the Guy Community is extensive and ongoing, the three girls are all 4-H members, Joe is a former M.D. Councillor. There are so many organizations that have been supported by the Chaibos’ involvement it is mind boggling; the area Surface Rights Board, SARDA, the Library Board, Twilight Figure Skating Club, the NFU, FNA, Peace Region Forage Association to name a few.
Terry was a recipient of the Alberta Centennial Citizen Award, the family has won numerous awards at various seed fairs including the 2004 Calgary Seed Fair and 2004 Northlands Pedigreed Seed competition.
The family definitely shows a respect for the community organizations by giving of themselves thoroughly, as a family they enjoy horseback riding, extracurricular sports and skating on their backyard skating rink.
The Award was presented Nov. 8, 2009 at a gala dinner during Northlands Farm Fair. The M.D. was represented by area Councillor Don Gosselin and his wife Paulette. Our area MLA, the Honourable Hector Goudreau was also in attendance to congratulate the family.
